The collective creation of myths
[ WHO WE ARE ]
Underground Productions / MYTHOGRAPHY is a young, passionate group of aspiring theatre-makers based in Edinburgh, committed to producing joyous and demanding pieces of theatre. We unearth myths of the past and imagine the myths of the future through wild rewritings and new translations.
Firmly rooted in European folklore, francophone literature, and the practice of translation, our theatrical wanderings draw from a plurality of sources and cultural expressions. We aim to bridge the gap between languages, invoking our collective imagination to find the difficult questions and inspiring tales that will resonate and unite us in a divided world. Each production is a chance for us to experiment with electric combinations of genres and different currents of theatrical language and style.
We’re learning to navigate the waters of the industry with little to no guidance and plenty of optimistic intuition. It’s sure to be a wild ride and we can’t wait.

[ TRIPTYCH OF THE YOUNG GIRL ]
This season, our three year-cycle baptized “Tryptich of the Young Girl” is coming to a close with Antigone. After Salomé (2023) and Ondine (2022), Antigone is the third and final chapter of a three part journey through myth in search of the dangerous and elusive figure of the young girl. In different ways, Ondine, Salomé and Antigone each embody cataclysmic forces in the female form with the potential to shatter our world.

[ ANTIGONE ]
Irreverent and full of rage, Jean Anouilh's radical rewriting of the greek myth offers us a haunting tale of luminous poetry, a modern unflinching tragedy fit for our times.
"Antigone is that meagre little thing over there, who sits and says nothing. In a moment, she will rise from the dusky little girl no-one took seriously at all to face the world, and her uncle Creon, who is the king. She knows that she will die — that she is young — and that she too, might have preferred to live."
Translation from the French by Jeremy Sams (2011)

[ SALOME ]
At once horrible and sublime, Oscar Wilde's one-act tragedy Salomé is a visionary take on the biblical myth of Salomé, princess of Judea. Capturing the violence of the male and female gaze on the body, this symbolist poem depicts Salomé's lust for the prophet Jokannaan and her transcendence and transgression into blasphemy. A subversive portrait of female desire through the radical pursuit of art.
Translation from the French by Lord Alfred Douglas (1894)

[ ONDINE ]
Combining rich poetic language and extravagant humour, this French play by Jean Giraudoux tells the tale of a young water-nymph falling in love with a knight-errant as two foreign worlds collide: the human, and the supernatural.
Impulsive, frank, and filled with wonder, Ondine is a young water nymph drawn to the human world. One stormy night by the lake, she meets Hans, a knight-errant travelling through the nearby forest, and immediately and violently falls in love with him. To free herself of the water world, Ondine is forced to make a secret pact with The Old One, ultimately bringing about the tragic end.
Translation from the French by Philomène Cheynet (2021)
